It’s become standard for anyone wanting a glamorous aura to pick out their dogs like they pick out their shoes. “Ooh – I’ll have that darling one in the corner, great color – matches my handbag too!”

And they’re easy to find – anyone with enough money can pick out the doglet of their dreams.

Perhaps even scarier than the free availability of ‘designer dogs’ is the fact that almost anyone can create a new breed of dog. The sudden increase in dogs as fashion statements has meant that there are many unscrupulous breeders trying to make a quick buck from expensive dogs with cute names.

Unfortunately there are so many risks with these kinds of breeding practices. Anybody can mix any combination of dogs but few can master doing it in a way that is good for the dogs, and the humans who live with them. It’s about much more than genetics. Why create a dog that is very likely to have a painful future?

Imagine that your cute Yorki-poo puppy has a very expensive medical future before them. Or try to imagine that this adorable Puggle that you’ve just brought home might have to have his eyes popped back into their sockets at regular intervals!

Amateur breeders are unleashing all kinds of dangerous conditions upon dogs who are being bred to fit in with our lifestyles.

It can be argued that all dogs came to be as a result of interbreeding. Not only are all purebreds a result of mixing but in fact every single dog today has some history of crossbreeding in their past.

There is a well deserved stigma surrounding these new so called ‘designer mutts’.

Various Pug and Pekingese breeds have very sensitive eyes. Pugs are known to have problematic eyes as are Pekingese. You could end up with a dog whose eyes come out of their sockets. And fixing it could require expensive and painful corrective surgery.

Sounds like something from a horror movie rather than a happy family dog!

What about the mixing of some larger dogs? It can be just as harmful if two genetically inferior specimens are used. You could end up crossing dogs that are plagued by hip dysplasia and land up with a crippled dog.

It’s the lack of predictability that makes these dogs such a risk. You never know what you are getting. And while the odds might be in your favor – nobody can guarantee the health of your designer puppy.

The American Kennel Club is considering allowing some of the more established breeds into the list of accepted and recognized breeds. But this process requires some organization on the part of breeders.

In order to be officially recognized there needs to be evidence that the dogs have at least a three generation pedigree. The dog must also be widely spread across the United States – across at least 20 states.

Labradoodles are the most well known of the designer dog clubs. Labradoodles are also at the forefront of acceptance into the American Kennel Club. There are some breeders who have at least 15 generations of Labradoodles and claim they can predict with great certainty the look and temperament of the dog. Only time will tell whether these dogs will be accepted into the mainstream. Many people are enjoying the benefits of dogs designed to fit in a handbag or dogs designed to live in small spaces.

It’s important to remember that whatever you are looking for in a dog – you are looking for in the puppy’s parents too. With these expensive puppies you might be shelling out allot of money for a great disappointment.

Check as much as you can about the mix you are most interested in. Rather leave combinations that you can see might have similar weaknesses. Don’t buy puppies from people who seem to be more interested in your money than the wellbeing of their puppies.

At the end of the day – good puppies come from good homes. Knowledge about genetic disorders is as important as warmth and love when it comes to making great pets.

Until designer dogs become more widely recognized – it’s best to stick to the more traditional mixes. At least you will know what you are getting.

If a purebred puppy doesn’t really appeal to you – why not rather think about buying an adult dog from a shelter. At least this way you can have a bit more certainty about the dogs temperament and looks.

At the end of the day your designer mutt might end up costing you more. If your dog has some suspect heritage you will need many tests to screen for a range of possible ailments. There are so many good skin care products online, you’d be missing out if you didn’t look into buying your products via the web. But, as with everything on the web, it’s buyer beware: there’s plenty of junk thrown in with the good stuff. Here’s what to look for and what to look out for:

Skin Care Products’ Ingredients

At bare minimum, the product listing should show all the ingredients listed on the actual product label, both active ingredients (the ingredient that actually performs whatever treatment the product is supposed to provide), as well as inactive ingredients (ingredients used for filler, textures, scents, and other materials that are only there to help sell the product rather than fulfill its mission).

The site should also explain in plain English what each ingredient does. You should do a quick web search on one or two of the ingredients you don’t recognize, to see if the product listing’s explanation of what the ingredient is accurate or if it’s distorted.

For instance, companies sometimes try to give the impression that ingredients that are really only used as colorants or preservatives provide some skin care benefit. They do this to mask the fact that the essential active ingredient in the product may be the same as dozens of other products on the market.

Guarantees

Don’t take any guarantees at face value until you’ve checked them out. A money-back guarantee may hide the fact that it would simply be too much expense or trouble to return the product.

For instance, if the price of the product is ten dollars plus five dollars shipping and handling, and the money-back guarantee requires you to ship back the unused portion to get it, you will have spent five dollars on shipping, meaning you are only really getting five dollars back. Then of course there’s the original shipping and handling fee, which is often not included in the money-back guarantee.

Faced with putting the gunk back in the jar, repacking it, mailing it back, and waiting for a meager refund, many people will simply give up–the money-back guarantees of many sub-par products depend on this phenomenon.

In short, if the money-back guarantee requires you to return the unused product and/or does not cover the original shipping and handling fee, it’s not much of a guarantee.

OK, you’re off to a model photo shoot. But, did you remember to pack your bag? Did you put everything you need in it? I hope this article will be helpful to you and start you on the right foot in making sure your model bag is complete.

What you bring to your model photo session will depend upon whether this is your first shoot for a portfolio or a paying job. Either way, this section will help you to be prepared for whatever reason you’re doing the model session.

You’re now standing lifeless in front of your closet – Wardrobe Essentials

Here are the essentials for your wardrobe. As stated above, some of the clothing listed here will be provided if this is a model shoot for a client.

- Casual – blue jeans, sports & knit tops, button up tops, shorts, cutoff blue jeans, etc.
- Business Suit – for a different look
- Sports (exercise, uniforms, shorts, etc.) – If you plan to do some sports modeling
- Lingerie – If you plan to enter the lingerie market
- Swim wear – needs to be a bikini that really flatters you
- Any props like hats, neckties, men’s shirts, jackets, etc.
- G-string & bra in flesh tone color – This is to eliminate lines that show under clothing
- Hose/nylons in an assortment of colors
- Socks in different colors including black and white
- Bring several different bras including at least one push-up and one in flesh tone color
- A robe to wear between changes during the photo session
- Bring a scarf to wear when changing to help keep makeup off client’s and your clothing
- You may also want to pack an iron or steamer for those wrinkles that are bound to show up from the trip.

Accessories – You’ve got to have something to compliment the clothes, right?

Along with each outfit, try to bring accessories which will accent or match the outfit. Keep accessories simple.

- Assortment of necklaces
- Earrings
- Bracelets
- Choker (these are popular at the time of this writing)
- Wristwatch – You normally wouldn’t wear a watch unless you are doing a photo where you will be looking at the time.

Shoes, Shoes, Shoes

As with accessories, shoes should match or accent the outfit. But, you can also think outside the box on the subject of footwear. For example; High heels have a totally different look with jeans or swim wear than with an evening dress.

- Dress shoes – Bring several different pairs
- High heels – Also an assortment
- Jogging shoes – white
- Boots or high heel boots
- Sandals

Don’t forget about the hair

Below are some items you’ll need for your hair (or hair removal)

- An assortment of combs and hairbrushes
- A curling iron
- Hair rollers
- Straightener
- A couple of headbands
- Shaving cream and a couple of sharp razors
- Anything else you use for hair care

When coming to the model shoot, I would suggest leaving the hair fairly natural with very little (if any) hairspray so that you, or the MUA, can work with it after you arrive.

Makeup and facial

Even if your shoot involves a make-up artist, you still may want to pack the following …

- Your complete makeup kit along with a mirror
- A moisturizer
- Cottonballs and swabs
- Lip balm
- Vaseline
- A good skin cleanser
- Several different shades of lip color (be sure to bring some solid colors)

Nails, finger that is.

A quick tip about nails. Remember that in photos, your eye will move to vivid colors first, especially red. So, take this into account as to whether you want people viewing your hands or your face.

- Here is a checklist for nail products to take to your photo shoot.
- Your complete manicure kit
- Nail polish with neutral color
- Remover kit for nail polish

A nice manicure will really enhance your model photos, especially images where your hand is near your face in close-ups so pay particular attention to your nails.

This should pretty much cover you for most photo shoots but as stated above, listen to the photographer or client and be sure to bring wardrobe he or she wants.
